About The Artist

Gillian Summerfield
My work is done in various media – charcoal, pencil, oil pastels, oil and acrylic paint. For a number of years it was based on figurative subjects such as the human form, plants and trees.
I have always drawn, using charcoal or pencil as a means of observation and exploration before moving on to colour using oil pastels and then oil paint. Through this process I wanted to convey the essence of the subject before me, be it the rhythm the leaves of a plant make in space or the branches of a tree soaring up to the sky.
My aim was to make, through mark making and colour, something more abstract, pared down and less representational.
In the last 5 years I have worked in a completely abstract and intuitive way using mainly acrylic paint. I want to explore colour, texture and mark making in a much freer way and without any restrictions.I may at some stage return to working figuratively though hopefully with more spontaneity.
I work on each painting for months at a time, taking risks and making mistakes. Out of this chaos I continually look for something to emerge which will lead me forward to create a piece of work where all the colours and marks make an integrated whole.
